Preface :
Post -Colonial study is a theoretical structure which gives
new perspective to look towards the things and also rejects the dominant
western way of seeing things. Means we may say that post colonialism rejects
the superiority of western culture.To
discuss post -colonialism in detail ,First we have to discuss colonialism so
that we can understand the concept of post colonialism very well.
Colonialism
and Imperialism are often used interchangeably . The word colonialism comes
from the Roman word "Colonia" which means "farm" or "Settlement " and referred to Romans who settled in other lands but still
retained their citizenship.
Accordingly
the Oxford English Dictionary .......
A
settlement in a new country. ....A body of people who settle in a new locality
, forming a community subjects to or connected with their parent state; the
community so formed ,consisting of the original settlers and their descendants
and successors , as long as the connection with parent state is kept up.
Colonialism
was not an identical process in different parts of the world but everywhere it
locked the original inhabitants and the new comers into the most complex and
traumatic relationships in human society.
The
process of ' Forming a community' in the new world necessarily meant
unforming or reforming the communities
that exist this already there and involve a wide range of practice including
trade , blunder , negotiation warfare ,genocide , enslavement
rebellions.So,
Colonialism can be defined as conquest and control of other people's lands and
goods. some
questions which are held us to understand the meaning of postcolonialism questions......
Do
you ever feel that when you speak you have already some in some sense been
spoken for ? Or that when you hear others speaking that you are
only even going to be the object of their speech ? Do
you sense that the speaking would never think of trying to find out how thing
seem to you from where you we ? That you are living world of others , a world
that exists for others .
Post colonialism claim the right of all people on this earth to the same material and culture
well being. The reality through is that world today is a world of inequality
and much of different falls across the broad
division between people of the waste and those of the non-waste.
Post colonialism as term describes the practice and ideas as
various of those with feminism and socialism . It is about changing world . A
world that has been changed by struggle . It
disturbs the order of the world . It threatens , privilege and power re-forces to acknowledge the superiority of the western culture. Its radical agenda is to
demand equality and well being for all human beings on this earth.
Postcolonial
study is all about language and power . And we find identity crisis in
postcolonial literature .Getting idea about such great term post colonialism now reading literature must find where is the
problem ?
'Post
colonial' refers to specific group of people rather than to location or a
social order, which may include such people but is not imitated to them. Post
colonial theory has been a crossed
of preciely this : it shifts the focus from location and
institution to individual and their subjunctives postcoloniality becomes vague condition of people anywhere and everywhere and specifies local do not
matter.
There
is at another issue its in the term ' and this time the problem with 'Post '
but with 'colonial' food, or music. or language or etc of any culture and we
think of as post colonial evokes earlier stories and shades of colour that
involve the colonial.
"The Third World" is seen as world
define entrierly by its relations to colonialisation.

Above
three points are more important in my assignment. This discussing
above point
in detail with Ania Loomba reference , we apply the post colonialism in
other texts.
Race
class and colonialism :-
Ania
Loomba gives the example of charlotte
Bronte's novel Jane Eyre to describe class and race.
Jane
Eyre , the young orphan is to be sent away from the house of her rich relatives
who think of her as a badly behaved burden. Jane choose to go to a boarding
house rather than to her poorer relations because she says,
" I was not heroic enough to
purches liberty at the price of caste."
Caste
was of course a concept that become familiar in England from colonial
experiences in India, and it marked a social , economic and religious hierarchy
overlaid with connections of purity and pollution , similar to those that
shape the idea of race.
According to Robert Young,
"
If according to Marxism , race should be properly understood as class, it is
clear that for the British upper classes class was increasingly thought of in
terms of race."
Colonialism was the means through which
capitalism achieved its global expansion. Racism simply facilitated this
process , and was the conduit through which the labor of colonized people was appropriated.
Ania
Loomba says that Race and racism are the basis on which unfree labour is
pressed into colonialists service.
Racist ideologies identified different sections of people as intrinsically or
biologically suited for particular tasks.
The
ideology of racial superiority translated easily into class terms. The
superiority of the white races , one colonist argued , clearly implied
that.....
'The black men must forever remain cheap labour and slave.'
And
the imperial mission , based on a hierarchy of races , perfectly with
the economic needs of the colonists . The relation between them is not simple
Co-existence but what Hall describes as
' an articulation between different modes of production , structured in some
relation of dominance."
Ania
Loomba describe and says in her first addition book which is published into
2002. Racially
marginalised peoples were also described in terms of servitude , as in the
expression that a Jew is 'a slave to the World."
Gender and Sexuality :
In each era , we find gender
discrimination in our society one or another way. Analogous debates have marked
the relationship of class and gender. And gender is directly connected with
oppression of women .'Gender' is given by society and we have to accept it.
From the beginning of the world, women
are treated as inferior as object and besides these 'How precisely women are marginalized.' Whether it is England ,
Africa or India , there are no any difference in treatment of women . They all
are equal to treat women as only object not as human being. And still in 21st century women are
not free to wear what they want to wear. people give judgement on her character
through her appearance and clothes , only.
Having the idea of "
Motherhood" - what we are doing? we just damage the 'Nature' . We corrupt the
'Nature' and how easily women accept all those suppression with the name of
'Culture' and 'Sanskar' only. We may think that......

How does the oppression of women connect with the operations of Capitalism?"
Native women and their bodies are
described in terms of the promise and fear of the colonial land, metaphoric use
of the female body varies in accordance with the exigencies and histories of
particular colonial studies, situations. Such way, from the beginning of the colonial period
till its end, female bodies symbolise the conquered land.
Gayatri Spivak telescopes this dynamic
into a pitchy sentence :
"
White men are saving brown women from brown man."
Female volition desire and
agency are literary pushed to the margins of the civilised world. But not all
margins are equally removed from the centre : Skin colour and female behaviour
come together in establishing a cultural hierarchy with white Europe at the
apex and black Africa at the bottom.
Various ways of positioning
and erasing women in colonial writings indicate the intricate overlaps between
colonial and sexual domination. These connection exist both as part of the
'Common sense ' about race , and gender and in a more codified form, within
scientific discourse.
In patriarchal society............
" Women are
split subjects who watch themselves being watched by men."
They turn themselves into objects
because femininity itself is defined by being gazed upon by men.
Post
colonial Feminism :
Though women are the part of the
society , each things are told from male point of view. Women are there but she
is always an object, never a subject. For
centuries it is assumed that women are less intelligent than men. All these
attitudes are part of a larger system in which women were dominated, exploited
and physically abused by men.
Feminists have also had to contended
with the fact that relations between women themselves are equal and can
in certain respects duplicate the same kind of power hierarchies that exist
between women and men.
Culture nationalists tended to define
themselves not against modernity in terms of technology , but against its
implications for women. Women are often taken to represent the mainstay of the cultural
identity of the nation. These
interventions by the colonial state against social practises that oppressed
women have been described as ' Colonial Feminism'.

Can postcolonial feminism be distinguished from such categories as 'The Third
World Feminism' or 'Women in third
-World politics'?"
Postcolonial feminism involves any challenge to
dominant patriarchal ideologies by women of the third world. Postcolonial
feminism begins from the perception that its politics are framed by the active
legacies of colonialism.
Women's
struggle make clearest the fact that while the anti -colonial campaigns were
directed against the colonial regime towards the political goal of sovereignty,
postcolonial struggle are directed the postcolonial sate as well as against the
western interests that enforce its neo-colonial status.
After

" Loomba gives a detailed picture of the concept of race in Shakespeare's day. Loomba's scholarship is rigorous carefully grounding interpretation of the plays in the ideologies of Shakespeare's time."

's compact yet comprehensive Shakespeare, race and colonialism offers a
systematic approach to the conjuction of race and Shakespeare.
Shakespeare , Race and Colonialism :
The biggest name of English
literature. He contributed 36 or 37
plays and many sonnets to the literature and still readers enjoys his works. But
for long time , people examine his world with scholarly and rational thinking
and Ania Loomba is one of them.
'Shakespeare
, race and colonialism ' looks in depth at 'Othello' , ' The Merchant Of
Venice' 'Antony and Cleopatra' ' Tempest and 'Titus Andronicus , also shows how
racial difference shapes the language and themes of other plays.
Shakespeare's
plays contain so many fascinating and central characters whose 'differences'
are crucial to their characters fate - from Shylock and his daughter Jessica to
Othello and Caliban.
For
centuries , platys like 'Othello' and 'The Tempest' have spoken about ;race' to
readers or audiences whose lives have been
and enormously effected by the racial questions. But such as 'race ' or
'racism', 'Xenophobia' , 'ethnicity' 'Colonial nation' appropriate for analyzing communities and identities in early modern Europe ?

Shakespeare
wrote many plays and each play we find this aspect but here in my assignment I just
want to discuss one of the tragedy -
'Othello' in detail. So, let's discuss the play with Race and Gender.
" Othello"
- William Shakespeare
In
Ania Loomba's book " Shakespeare , Race and Colonialism", she talks
about the different aspects of race, gender
and religion that work together in the play 'Othello'.
We
all know the story of the play , I just want to refer the background of the
play and characters with postcolonial
aspects.
Ania
Loomba discuss the stereotypes in her work . The stereotypes construction of
the mind define " Turkish" or " Moorish" and she tries to
tension between Islam and Christianity and how they play into these binaries.
This things deals in her first chapter " Othello and racial question."
Ania
Loomba discusses the place of women in Shakespeare's play and their interaction
with idea. Through the communication of characters, Loomba tries to see play as
complex and confusing web where there are no definitive answers and where characters and the audience may
become easily lost in the social constructions presented. Here, we connect the
point that post colonialism is all about Language and Power structure.
Stereotype Of
Moorishness :
According
to Loomba , Stereotypes pushed Moors and Black men into beastly , inhuman
category:
"Both blacks and Muslims were
regarded as given to unnatural sexual and domestic practices , as highly
emotional and even irrational and prone
to anger and jealousy."
Beginning
of the play 'Othello' defies some particular categories and show himself to be
an able general and sensible man. But his supposedly innate Turkishness resurfaces after Iago's subtle persuasions.
May be this play creates fear in audiences that person can't be changed at the
core, that perhaps Othello had never truly become Christianised , and that
jealously and other Turkish traits were always in him somewhwere.
Othello - As an other :
Though
black men live with white people and their society , they are never able to mix
in white community. They always considered as ' Other ' in white community. The
same way, although integrating into venetian , or white society , he will
always be categorized as the 'Other'.
The
fact that he is dark skinned is clue to other that ,even though a great man,
somewhere inside he is "Monarchy .....darker than Christians."
Othello
fights for Christian Venice, marries a Christian woman - Desdemona and is a
high ranking official , but he " Ultimately embodies the stereotypes
of Moorish lust and violin - a jealous ,
murderous husband of a Christian lady."
Through
this we may say that it is clear that Othello is seen as not only exploiting a
pure white woman , but a Christian one as well.
Women In 'Othello' :
Women In 'Othello' :
In ' Othello' the sort of insubordination is
both epitomized and defied by Desdemona. Here, we find Turkish inferiority with
that of the duplicity and inferiority of women. Desdemona selects her own
husband who is not of her own race, thus defying her father. Always goes on
fear of men. The woman thinking for herself , speaking out and making her own
decisions.
In '
Othello' , Desdemona is chaste and faithful to her husband but Iago plays on
the fear of a straying wife to Othello. Throughout the play, it seems
like...... as if Othello's Turkishness can be understood on the basis that
Desdemona could be potentially betraying him. In this way, the misogynistic
suggestions by Iago cause the race question and the gender question to collide
in a manner where women potentially end up just slightly lower the Turk in
audiences' mind.
The
whole concept of this play can be summed up with Loomba's quote that........
" The Power
of this play is that it brings
blackness and religious difference into simultaneous play while also making visible the tensions between them."
Thus
, discussing ' Othello' - with post colonial references we may say that
postcolonial critics are accused of reading Shakespeare's plays as
ideologically retrograde of ' attacking
' Shakespeare, as well as of positing a reductive relationship between text and
context.

Draupadi
( In Search Of Herself )
- Kajal Oza Viadya
Kajal
Oza Viadya is well-known writer of Gujarati literature. She deals with some of
the points in which readers are interested.
In this novel, she breaks the traditional perspective of ' Draupadi '. She describes story with
Draupadi's point of view.
In
Mahabharta - Draupadi is also main character though somehow she is marginalised
and suffers a lot. Draupadi is the central character of it and then even being
a woman , she endures much pain without any considering.
But....
Kajal Oza - writer gives some new characteristics to this character -
'Draupadi'. Let's revisited the character of
Draupadi.
Under
colonial rule, the image of nation or culture as mother worked to evoke both
female power and female helplessness. Novel begins with the Sholks of "Bhagvad
Gita" and Draupadi has the habit of asking questions.

of her habit of asking questions , her father King Drupad and her brother

and through this , we find the reflection of patrichal society and its rules
and regulation which is already decided
by society for women .Women always are treated as Object only and as the
thing of enjoyment.

Communities
controls the activities of women and they decide women's limit and boundaries. But
in society people have also literary exhorted women to produce son only who may
live and die for the nation. Women never
treat as human beings in any society yet they give so many things to others.
Women
have no right to raise questions. Women can't raise their voice against the male dominance
society. They just accept the things which is given by male. Women never allow
to think about themselves. They are not able to decide whether they are
happy or not.

Women have no right to raise questions against the male dominant society. They just accept the things which is given by male. Women never consider as Free. They have to follow their construction. but this quality becomes cruse for Draupadi. From the childhood , girls are

Draupadi is consciously aware about what is happening around her and her never accept the thing as it is without understanding.
Many postcolonial regimes have been outright
repressive of women's right . Using religion or Sanskar as the basis on which
to enforce their subordination. Women has to over come male position to their
equal participation in the struggles for self -determination, democracy and
anti-imperialism.
As
generally , we consider women with their Softness , tenderness of heart ,
emotions and feelings ,full of all virtues and idol of sacrifices. But what
about herself , her own life, her own devotion ? Who decide such things for
women? Yes, obviously Man,only.
But
..In this novel ,Draupadi tries to
falsify the traditional - orthodox way
of living life of woman and all virtues are broken down which is decided before
her birth. Though she is beautiful young woman she is more passionate and anger
in her practical life.
According
to me, readers like more Kajal Oza's 'Draupadi' rather than Ved Vyas . No doubt at some extent he portrays Draupadi
as revolutionary but then even she is characterised through male point of view.

herself because of this rigid society. Though she is able to solve the problem

that it is impossible for us to recover the voice of ' Subaltern ' or oppressed
colonial subject.

what extent did colonial power succeed in silencing the colonised? When we
emphasise the destructive power of colonialism do we necessarily position colonised
people as Victims, incapable of answering back?

what voices do the colonised speaks -
their own ,or in accents borrowed from their masters? Is the projects of
recovering the 'Subaltern ' best served by locating her separateness from
dominant culture or by highlighting the
extent to which she moulded even those processes and cultures which subjugated
her ?
In
'Can the Subaltern speak" - Spivak
suggest that it is impossible to recover the voice of the 'Subaltern' or
oppressed colonial subject.

I
think , still in 21st century, we remember Draupadi because of her questioning
sprit and rational way of thinking. She is suffered because she knows what is
right or wrong. She is able to raise her voice against the society without any
kind of fear.
Though
Draupadi is stronger , thinker and intelligent than the other she is not able
to express her free will about her life. She wants to marry Lord Krishna. After seeing once , she wants Krishna as her
husband. She loves loves him and with Time passes that love turns into 'Devotion'
and ' Bhakti' kind of the things.

Reading
'Draupadi' is wonderful experience. One
can give judgement Draupadi as' great woman ' 'Sati ' of Aryavarta. And so many other things are in already in our
mind and there fore we easily accepted the things which is happened to '
Draupadi '. These all things are very obivious tobear being a woman. In our
society , women can be justified with their endurance capicity. But who cares about Draupadi ? Who thinks about Draupadi ?What
about her dilemma? I think throughout
the novel Draupadi stands as .....Subaltern.
Epilogue :
Discussing both - one play and one novel - 'Othello' by
William Shakespeare and " Draupadi "
by Kajal Oza Vaidya, we may say that each text has its own subaltern
object through which we can read postcolonial aspect in the text.with
reference of Ania Loomba ,we discuss Post colonialism in both text which is
belonged to two different culture and then somehow situations of subaltern is
same. Race, gender and colonialism constantly go together. In both text, we
find such kind of identity crisis.
In
Draupadi , there is only gender inequality because of rigidity and power
structure of male dominant society. In ' Othello ' , we find 'Race '
differences. But what makes differences into women's situations? 'Nothing ' Both Desdemona and Draupadi are suffering from
their own race and own society.
Desdemona lost her life also.
Desdemona selects her own husband who is not of her own
race and starts raise voice against society , indirectly. But ' Draupadi' is
not able to choose her husband to whom she likes most though it is her own 'Swayamvar' . On the surface level it seems like
that it is but it is not existed there, also.
Both
Desdemona and Draupadi are unable to speak
and treated as 'Object' and without any conventional truth. Othello
killed Desdemona without listening her
at least once. How and why ? What she made mistake? Why Draupadi is unable to apply her thinking
in her practical life. Only , because of these male dominant society, which is
not so strong to endure female power.
In
each era , we find that women are subjugated one can't free from this things
because she has to follow rules and regulations of that particular society and
get only suffering and pain. Being a women
, they can't raised their voice because they are opressed and the subaltern who
can never speak .Thus, we can read this both text with postcolonial
perspective.
